2050 STATE OF THE DEVELOPING WORLD REPORT : A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE

The world keeps developing and changing as time passing by, whether to a better way or worse in some aspects of the environment and population growth. Many developments are moving forward to modernization (e.g., Technology), but there are some which moving backward (e.g., Fashion). So, what kind of change and development that would have happened in 2050?
To imagine what 2050 would look like, first of all we need to see the past, which is world in 2012. Because I’m a firm believer , that to be able to understand the future, you must know the past.  We should consider what has taken us to where we are today and what has changed along the way.
What kind of world that we had in 2012? We had world with  many big issues, such as environmental degradation, fossil-fuels dependent, global economy collapse, wars, poverty, uncured diseases (e.g., AIDS), starvation, global warming, and so forth. But, there were a lot of communities and movement that created by some people who have big concerns to our world’s issues. At that time, everyone started to look for every possibility of sustainable development in almost every aspect. Sustainable development was kind of famous and well-known issue in 2012. What will the world look like in 2050?  Worse or better?
Here we are in 2050. The world’s population has surpassed 10 billion people. We don't need to visit India or China to grasp the consequences. All of us have lived with it. The world’s population in 1999 was 6 billion and by 2012 has reached more than 7 billion. According to the UN population division, the earth’s population will increase by 150.000 people per day, which means there are 1 extra billion people on earth every 10 years. The world will need to increase food production to feed our increasing numbers, we will need to find more ways to grow more food per acre. Population and waste are mathematically linked to resources and the climate. We are definitely in the process to food and resources crisis now.
As the world’s population approaches ten billion, the challenges facing humanity have never been greater. Fortunately, the solutions to many of the most fundamental challenges can be found in science that have created countless innovations. But providing the food, energy, and safety needs of a growing population will require more than science alone, we also need humanity . These two things that have been helping us from the crisis and problems through the years . By 2050, the world consumes a lot more energy than years before , and while the demand for energy grows, the supply of fossil fuels doesn’t. Deep expertise in microbiology, fermentation, polymer science and electrochemistry have helped make possible the transition from fossil fuels to more sustainable alternatives.  I see countries utilizing clean energy (wind energy, solar energy, nuclear energy, or perhaps a new and clean energy source) instead of fossil fuels. People have aware that we can't still live an over-consumptive life without thinking about how to replace the resources that we already used. We’re starting to run out almost all the resources, therefore we don't have any other option than to applying sustainable ways of living. Every element of human is starting to apply it, such as controlling living conditions (e.g., ecovillages, eco-municipalities and sustainable cities), reappraising work practices (e.g., Using Permaculture, green building, sustainable agriculture), or developing new technologies that reduce the consumption of resources. People now have realized that sustainability isn't just about saving forests and animals, but more to do with effectiveness of using all resources, including energy and waste reduction, among others.
The issues associated with population growth seem endless : poverty, food and water supply, world health, climate change, deforestation, fertility rates, and more. It’s hard not to be alarmed, right now on earth, water tables are falling, soil is eroding, glaciers are melting, fish stocks and more species are vanishing. A billion people go hungry each day, mostly in poor countries. We’re waiting for the time to human extinction. The earth is in critical condition, we need a lot of big changes against our mindset, behavior, and habit.  It might too late to re-design the world, but it’s not too late to change the ways we all consume. If this over-populated things keep on going, we’re going to face wars and great slaughters soon . The population growth must be cut out. A decrease in the human population would prevent a significant amount of man-made human suffering, such environmental degradation. I think CO2 emissions must be drastically reduced at almost any cost. The good news is the era of explosive growth is expected to end by 2050.
Thus, what we might see in 2050 is the transition of a fossil fuel-dependent society , a higher degree of concern for living sustainable, population explosion and all the problems that follow. This whole writing competition is important because, at least we can give some time to think about the future and it makes us aware. Predicting the future is important , we need to start to think about what kind of future we would like for ourselves and for the next generation, moreover we need to know what decisions we need to make today for the better future. By observing our future, we actually create it. What human mind observes, it will be created, sooner or later.
Can the planet take the strain? How big will the population actually grow? Neither history nor science can certainly guide humans to the future. The answers will depend on the decisions each of us makes, or we might be doing is repeating the same stories in history in different scenarios. Whatever it is,  may humanity and the wonderful planet on which it was born , live long and prosper.

Imagine

What kind of future do you expect from the world? What kind of future that I wanted? What kind of future that we all wanted? We all want one thing for sure , which is a safe and peaceful world to live in.  Furthermore , what does exactly safe and peaceful mean?
First of all, lets talk some of the world’s biggest problems first.

Oil is nonrenewable sources, but our civilization is based on it. Petroleum has powered the modern world for almost 100 years.  This means that in the years ahead, if we’re not prepared to find its substitutes, we might live in chaos. The experts have found it’s quite difficult to find the substitutes, for examples : hydrogen has storage and other problems, we can’t use enough wind turbines, and solar power is quite expensive to provide us all the energy we need. This oil problem will enhance others problem such poverty, wars, and more. All we can do for helping is conserving the energy as well from now on by eliminating the use of energy that really isn't needed by us.

Rapid climate change or global warming indeed is affecting the way we live. Fossil fuels that we are burning up is spewing carbon dioxide in the air, which prevents sunlight from getting out and causes the Earth to warm up. The greatest threats to our world is not “Global terrorism”, “World War III”, or even “weapons of mass destruction” , but our mother nature. This includes increased irregular weather patterns, rising sea levels, earthquakes, and all of the events that can caused by climate change. This is a problem that needs to be dealt with in the years ahead if we are to avoid destructive events, such tsunami, Katrina storm, species extinction, and so forth.

Poor education, I am a firm believer that education conquers all. I believe, with good and equitable education, would naturally  gravitate towards increased personal freedoms and human rights as the education of the population increased.

Religions , discrimination , and everything that related, are some of the biggest problem on earth. Discrimination, we do it sometimes in the way we associate with people in our everyday life even we don't realize. Discrimination can happen also in the name of religion. Religions, throughout history it has started wars and been used to justify everything from genocide to slavery.  The solution to this problem is to create peace among religions. Religions shouldn’t be washed away, it just needs to change. And I think It would help if everyone would recognize the worth , equity, and dignity of every person, religions just a medium for us to be closer to God and to be better as a human. In our future, there should not be any differences, differences where people are looked by their religions, race, social status, etc. We all want to ruling out discrimination against future generations.

Technology should be a solution for many world’s problems, especially non-renewable sources problem and environmental friendly system. The technology could bring us together, the people of the world can see and protect each other. We are living in a new world, social media world, where people can share ideas and not thinking in borders. Efficient policies should be compatible with increasing human welfare.
In a picture of an ideal future, the problems above should not be there anymore. So, for me a safe and peaceful world is a world that doesn’t have those problems, and  including sustainable development in every aspect and the culture of peace within it. Sustainable development should  meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development based on the assumption that societies need to manage capitals (social, economic, natural, cultural) , which may be non-substitutable and whose consumption might be irreversible.  Ways of living more sustainably can take many forms from controlling living conditions and reappraising work practices (e.g., using permaculture, green building, sustainable energy), or developing new technologies that reduce the consumption of resources.

We are one world, all brothers and sisters. It’s nothing to do with age, race, nationality, or whether you have money or not. We should create a safer, more peaceful, cleaner environment for every living thing on planet earth and it could help to avoid our planet’s ultimate downfall. Humanity  is no longer as simple as thinking of generation existence, but we have to make sure that the world we leave behind is as good as, or might be better than, the one we found. The future doesn’t have to resemble the past, we all can create the future we want.

How Education Matters Since We Were Kids

This Friday morn , I played Futsal at the HMF homecoming event with my collegian mates. We played at the open field that could be watched by people that just passing by or jogging around. So, There were some primary school student that was watching our plays. They were screaming around and saying some impolite and appropriate words. Some of them also trying to imitate how "the true Chinese" actually speaking, the accent, when the Chinese players came closer.

What I've been always thinking about, when I saw those impolite kids, I don't want my children act like them, I don't want my children to be that narrow-minded, but how?
Okay, I believe everything could be done by educating. If you did something wrong, you need understanding. Through education, you can be what you want if you really mean it, a millionaire, a professor, a doctor , and so forth.

Okay, maybe their parents are just too careless thinking about they should teach their children how to behave and not saying some appropriate words. Actually, I knew they're from low-middle class environment, and maybe their parents're just too busy thinking about how they can get a food, and so on. But, we can just tolerate it and say "It's okay, They're just a kids." I mean, No! Stop being too tolerable. It's something that we need to realize to teach the best values to our kids. I want to teach them that it's very okay to be different, and it's good if they can accept how the differences complete us all.

My kids should have an open mind, high tolerability with people or religions that different from them, they shouldn't see anyone based on their race, colors, religions.
